How members opt in and out of SMS and voice broadcast messages

What are Broadcasts?

Communiti is a platform used by churches, schools, and nonprofits to communicate with their members. Broadcasts allow community leaders to send important announcements, prayer requests, event reminders, and emergency notifications to opted-in members via SMS text message, voice call, email, and in-app notification.

How Members Opt In

SMS consent is collected in a separate, optional step that the member can skip or decline entirely. Declining SMS does not limit access to Communiti or to broadcasts — members who decline still receive broadcasts in-app and (if they choose) by voice call.

  1. Account creation: A member creates an account on Communiti and joins their church, school, or community organization. No messaging consent of any kind is collected at signup.
  2. Broadcast opt-in (no SMS): On the organization's Broadcasts page, the member may click the "Opt-In to Broadcasts" button. This enables in-app notifications only (plus voice calls for emergencies). It does not subscribe the member to SMS. Members are never auto-subscribed, and opting in is not required to use the platform.
  3. SMS consent (separate and optional): SMS is offered as an unchecked checkbox for each message category. The member must affirmatively check an SMS box and click Save Preferences to consent. The checkboxes are never preselected, never locked, and the member can leave all of them unchecked — or clear them at any time — and still receive broadcasts through the other channels.

Organization administrators may also invite members to opt in by sending an in-app notification with an opt-in prompt. The member must still complete the same two-step process above; an administrator cannot enable SMS for a member.

Opting in enables in-app notifications (plus voice calls for emergencies). It does not subscribe you to SMS text messages — SMS is a separate, optional choice you can make afterward. Opting in is not required to use Communiti.

By checking an SMS box and saving, you agree to receive recurring automated text messages from this organization via Communiti at your phone number on file. Consent is not a condition of membership or of using Communiti. Message frequency varies (typically 1–10 messages/week). Message and data rates may apply. How Members Opt Out

Members can opt out at any time through multiple methods:

  • In-app: Click the opt-out button on the organization's Broadcasts page to immediately stop all broadcast messages.
  • SMS reply: Reply STOP to any broadcast SMS message. Supported keywords: STOP, STOPALL, CANCEL, END, QUIT, UNSUBSCRIBE, REVOKE, OPTOUT.
  • Re-subscribe: Reply START to re-subscribe after opting out.

Types of Messages

Broadcast messages include:

  • Announcements: Community updates and news
  • Prayer requests: Shared prayer needs from the community
  • Event reminders: Upcoming events, schedule changes, cancellations
  • Emergency notifications: Urgent safety or weather-related alerts
  • Account verification: One-time passcodes for login security (2FA)

Message and data rates may apply depending on your mobile carrier and plan. Message frequency varies by community — typically 1-10 messages per week. Communiti does not charge members for receiving broadcast messages.
